The Mentalist is a Monster in R.E.P.O. that acts as an AoE Disruptor. It appears as a gray alien-like creature with a giant brain and purple aura. It is internally classified as a Tier 2 Monster.

Behavior[]

The Mentalist randomly floats around the level until spotting a player. Once it has spotted and is close enough to a player, it will begin to channel a purple aura sphere around itself that will pick up and lift any player, object, or small sized monster caught within during this time. After a few seconds of channeling, the aura sphere will turn red, no longer able to pick up anything, and the Mentalist will shortly after forcefully slam everything it caught onto the ground, dealing significant physics damage.

If the Mentalist is grabbed or stunned during its channeling, it will be interrupted and let go of anything it had grabbed. Anything caught within its aura can also be pulled away to prevent it from being slammed.

Tips[]

  • Mentalists make no noise when moving, so it's best to keep your guard up if you know you have one.
  • As of V0.3.0, players can now equip and use weapons while in tumble, even if they're within the Mentalist's aura, making it possible to attack and interrupt the Mentalist before it can slam.
  • If a teammate is caught in its attack, it is possible to grab and pull them out of it. It's best to either do this from a safe distance and/or wait until the Mentalist's aura turns red, when nothing can be picked up anymore.
    • Alternatively, the aura turning red is also when your best opportunity to counterattack with melee weapons is presented.
  • If the player lands on the C.A.R.T., Pocket C.A.R.T. or extraction point they will take no damage; this can be taken advantage of by putting a Pocket C.A.R.T. under the player as they're lifted.
    • Additionally, if the player is under a hiding spot and cannot be lifted up, the slam will deal no damage (as they're still on the floor).
  • While normally very tame enemies, as they do not do much damage nor do they have much Health, while also having a low strength breakpoint, Mentalists can become much more dangerous in later stages of the game, when there are also other enemies roaming the stage; being trapped by the Mentalist then subsequently spotted by another enemy such as a Headman can lead to almost guaranteed deaths.
  • If you have at least one Speed Upgrade, it is possible to bait the Mentalist's attack and then quickly run and slide or tumble out of the bubble before you can be picked up, leaving it vulnerable to counterattack after its missed attack, or at least making it waste time while you move to a different area. To ensure the best probability of this working, it's advised to have two or three speed upgrades to be safe.
