The Peeper is a level 1 Monster that is common among the first levels.
Appearance[]
The peeper resembles a giant eye with a bright orange iris that is always attached to the ceiling of rooms.
Behavior[]
The Peeper will spawn in a random location on the map, initially in a closed state. When a player maintains direct line of sight with a closed Peeper for a short period, the Peeper will open up its eye and force the player to look at it, along with zooming and distorting the player's screen and making the player's voice high-pitched. After about 3 seconds of continuously staring at a player it will start dealing 2 damage per second for the duration of the effect. The attack stops once the player breaks line of sight and then snatches their vision away from where it was.
When you kill the Peeper, it will either drop the orb normally, fail to drop it entirely or spawn the orb on random level point on the level. When killed in certain ways Peeper is guaranteed to drop the orb.
Tips[]
- The Peeper will never move, it will only change location if it despawns and then respawns in another area.
- It's possible to spot a Peeper before it activates, and the top half of it can be seen if it's in a room with a floor accessible above it.
- This top half can also be attacked to kill the peeper and make it drop an orb on the floor below.
- While affected by a Peeper, opening the map can be used to navigate the room.
- If a teammate is being affected by a Peeper, prompt them to tumble, then carry them out to safety.
- Items like Health Packs, Pocket C.A.R.T. or even Valuables and physics props can be used to break line of sight with a Peeper.
- Due to the low health of the Peeper, it can be killed easily with a Frying Pan in 2 hits, or in 1 hit with a Sword.
- If the player is alone with a melee weapon, they can jump and quickly swing upwards at the peeper to damage it.
- Using the Gumball Machine's effect doesn't work when a teammate is being targeted by the Peeper, as the Peeper's holding gaze will overpower the Machine's. However, the hypnotic pattern will still show up on the target's screen as if affected.
- Using ranged weapons to kill the peeper can help if you don't have time or space to deal with breaking line of sight normally.
- The Gun only needs one accurate bullet to kill it. The Pulse Pistol however cannot inflict any damage, as peepers cannot be stunned.
- The Peeper can become very dangerous when paired up with other Monsters or even pits, it can lure you into them, possibly killing you.
- Even if the Peeper's initial target breaks line of sight, do not rush into the room immediately afterwards, otherwise it will just change target towards you and put you under its gaze instead. After the first semibot has broken line of sight, you must wait 3 seconds before the Peeper gives up and despawns.
- If spotted by a peeper, it will force your grabber's tractor beam to disengage automatically, causing you to drop anything you're currently holding. Beware when moving fragile items, and make sure the room is devoid of peepers if you know one exists in the map.
- During the Super Moon phase, this makes peepers significantly more dangerous when moving enemy valuables, as they can force you to drop one that you're holding, resulting in a health-shredding explosion right next to you - possibly even multiple if other enemy valuables are close by as well - and therefore decimate your potential profits in the level. On top of that, you may also still be forced to gaze at the peeper and having additional health drained from you during this mayhem.
- If you find it before it activates, consider deliberately activating it and then backing up out of the room again. It's a lot easier to deal with when you're expecting it.
- A peeper can be especially dangerous if a Huntsman is in the area, as one may be tempted to quickly sprint out of the room upon activating a peeper, which upon doing so, can put them in the huntsman's crosshairs. If you know a huntsman is in the area - and especially if it's close by - it is important to remain crouched while edging towards an exit. Losing 2-10 HP from slowly breaking line of sight with a peeper is nowhere near as bad as losing 100 HP to a huntsman because you sprinted out of the room.
- Peepers are brutally dangerous to freshly-revived semibots, especially if they recklessly sprint into a room without checking, as they can get disoriented and unable to exit in time before dying. Make sure a healthier semibot checks rooms ahead of them, or at least provides them with a couple bursts of health to prevent them being one-shot by a peeper.
- To tie into the above point, refrain from sprinting blindly into rooms if you know a peeper's present. The closer you are to the door leading back out, the better your chance of getting away again without harm. Not to mention you may not be so easily disoriented if you were moving slowly at the time.
Trivia[]
- When the game first released, the Peeper didn't drop an enemy valuable upon death.
