ABOUT THE GAME

R.E.P.O. is an online co-op horror game featuring physics, proximity voice chat and scary monsters. You and up to 5 other players venture into terrifying locations to extract valuables using your physics-based grabbing tool!
The game is developed by indie game studio semiwork from Sweden on the Unity engine, and was released on Steam on February 26, 2025. The game became very popular in the first days after release. The game has similar gameplay to other extraction looters with games like Lethal Company and Content Warning, which hold a similar aesthetic and gameplay balance.
The game is currently in early access, but it already has enough content for intense gameplay (based on this Q&A by the developers, at least 12 months)!

Fun facts about R.E.P.O.
what the "dirt finder" looks like
list of the scrapped names in the code
As stated in the Q&A posted by semiwork, R.E.P.O. was originally a single player cleaning game where you had to clean a mansion with headman chasing you around. Some gameplay was shown by a dev here.
The code and models for the cleaning devices such as the vacuum cleaner and the duster are still in the game, and the device we use to pull up the map today is actually called a dirt finder in the files.
According to the code in the game, it looks like players were expected to choose a character before beginning their journey. A list of names can be found as listed. Walter, Axel, Robin, Jannek, Ruben, & Builder. It is currently unknown if they were meant to have skill sets or if they were apart of the cleaning game or the main game. Considering there are 6 names which matches the max player count, the devs may have considered roles in development.
McJannek Station, one of the levels in R.E.P.O, seems to be the only relation to the scrapped character names in the code.
Before the Robots were added, their placeholder was a pill shaped body with a square head. This early version still had the puppet-like head mechanic when speaking as shown here.
